Although Restless Legs Syndrome is not a primary sleep disorder, it can disrupt sleep for many sufferers. Sleep problems affect millions of Americans in all age groups. Below are a few descriptions of some common sleep disorders.
| Insomnia |
The inability to fall or stay asleep. Can be caused by worry, depression, pain, discomfort, fear, changes in sleep routine, certain medications, and caffeine. |
| Sleep apnea |
Breathing stops for 10 seconds or longer during sleep. Can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease and stroke. |
| Narcolepsy |
Characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and becoming drowsy or falling asleep without warning, often at inappropriate times and places. |
