Although Restless Legs Syndrome is not a primary sleep disorder, it can disrupt sleep for many sufferers. Sleep problems affect millions of Americans in all age groups. Below are a few descriptions of some common sleep disorders.

Common sleep problems




Insomnia The inability to fall or stay asleep. Can be caused by worry, depression, pain, discomfort, fear, changes in sleep routine, certain medications, and caffeine.
Sleep apnea Breathing stops for 10 seconds or longer during sleep. Can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease and stroke.
Narcolepsy Characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and becoming drowsy or falling asleep without warning, often at inappropriate times and places.
