How to Get Help for Restless Legs Syndrome

The symptoms of primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) can be similar to those of other disorders, so only your doctor can diagnose Restless Legs Syndrome. There are currently no specific tests for Restless Legs Syndrome. Diagnosis is primarily based on discussions with you, the use of a diagnostic screener, a review of your medical history, and a physical exam. Blood tests may be done to rule out other disorders, such as iron deficiency, that may be the cause of your symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome.

What you can do

The best way to get an accurate diagnosis is to provide as much information as possible about your symptoms to your healthcare professional. Here are a few suggestions to make diagnosis easier:

  • Use your Restless Legs Syndrome Symptom Checklist and My Symptoms list — print and take them to your appointment.

  • Make a list of any over-the-counter medicines, herbal and vitamin supplements, and prescription medicines you are currently taking.

  • Know the history of this condition in your family when discussing symptoms with your healthcare professional. Do any other members of your family have similar symptoms?
